“Stuck at Home” Special – Video Game Creation

Ages 10 to 17

VIDEO GAME CREATION WITH UNITY

SMALL GROUPS, TAUGHT LIVE

Challenge your child with a learning activity to create and program video games.

2 hours a day with a specialist teacher guiding them towards successful completion of their first game project.

The lengthy lockdown has children struggling to manage their screen time. Our video game creation program, offered virtually, is an opportunity to make productive use of this time stuck at home.

The camp introduces children to coding and design, with adapted professional software. We build a game together, combining all its different parts: images, video, sound, programming, and more!

By the end of the week, each of our students can proudly share their first 3D game prototype.

Make the most of this time at home by fostering your child’s creativity and problem-solving skills, with people who share the same interests.

Your child can continue the program for several weeks to further personalize their project and learn new concepts.

WHO IS THIS ACTIVITY FOR?

The video game creation camp is for beginners with no programming experience, who are interested in computers, like to solve puzzles, play games, or tell stories. The activity involves complex software and advanced use of a computer.

If you aren’t sure your child is ready for this course, we recommend starting with a week of the coding with Minecraft camp, which is fun and accessible.

Creating video games is a hands-on approach to programming that uses exploration and trial and error rather than theoretical presentations. If you are looking for a pure programming course, focused on the fundamentals of coding, we recommend our C++ programming camp (ages 12 and up – currently unavailable).

The camp is suitable forchildren ages 10 to 17. Students are separated into groups by age.

PROGRAM INFORMATION

Concepts covered

  • Basics of programming with the C# language. Those who don’t like coding can move through this part of the course quickly and devote more time to designing levels.
  • Game design methods and strategies used by pros to create games that gamers love.
  • Unity software, powerful and versatile, the #1 tool for professional and amateur game creators.
  • Basics of 2D and 3D digital art. Those wanting to delve deeper into art can take our digital art camp.

Game projects

Students progress step-by-step through structured learning, with a series of hands-on projects. Week 1 give students a chance to really get their feet wet and create a game with professional tools.

  • Week 1: Create a game prototype from the ground up. Get set up technically, learn the basics of Unity and C# coding. Create a 3D layout, position objects, establish ground gameplay mechanics, work the camera, and bring it all together into a game that is ready to play and try out with friends.
  • Week 2: Finalize the prototype started in Week 1. Add power-ups, music and sound effects as well as special effects, access a library of objects and textures, build different levels with checkpoints, deliver a complete, personalized game.
  • Week 3: Create an advanced platform game (like Mario Bros.) using a canvas. Work on level design, enemies as well as collectibles, and deliver a ready-to-play level.
  • Week 4: Finalize the game started in Week 3. Work on puzzles, rewards, various types of gameplay mechanics as well as complex levels, and compile a complete game.
